The KAUST Supercomputing Core Laboratory (KSL) is co-organizing with ANSYS and their Elite channel partner for the Middle East, Fluid Codes (https://fluidcodes.com), a three-day ANSYS workshop about ANSYS based engineering applications using Shaheen II Supercomputer from June 7-9. This is a hybrid workshop. Around 30 KAUST registrants will attend the event in-person. Rest of the KAUST, in-Kingdom, and international registrants will receive instructions for joining the online event. All registrants will be able to take certificate exam online. ANSYS is a leader in developing and marketing engineering simulation software. The software creates simulated computer models of structures, electronics, or machine components to simulate strength, toughness, elasticity, temperature distribution, electromagnetism, fluid flow, and other attributes. ANSYS software is used to determine how a product will function with different specifications, without building test products or conducting crash tests. If you have ever witnessed a rocket launch, flown on an airplane, driven a car, utilized a computer or a mobile device, crossed a bridge, or put on wearable technology, chances are that you have used a product where ANSYS software played a critical role in its creation.

The objective of this workshop is to engage industrial partners, educate engineering students, and strive towards establishing full service for providing engineering simulation solutions to the Saudi Industry. The summary of the planned activities for this free of cost event is shown below.

Day-1 Computational Fluid Dynamics

  • Presentations by Ansys experts on basic CFD analysis using ANSYS
  • Focus on meshing and analysis
  • Four hands-on sessions

Day 2: Computational Fluid Dynamics (cont’d)

  • Presentations by Ansys experts on basic CFD analysis using ANSYS
  • Focus on analysis and post processing
  • Four hands-on sessions

Day 3: HPC Lectures and TKS Students’ Session

  • Presentations by KSL expert on transitioning simulation workflow from workstation to supercomputer
  • Presentations by KSL expert on high performance computing
  • Presentation by KSL expert on new service for In-Kingdom consulting projects
  • Hands-on session by KSL expert on CFD workflow using Shaheen
  • CFD certificate exam
  • Simulation session for Grade 9/10 students
  • Certificate distribution

Here is a detailed agenda for the 3-day event.

The event is open to all researchers, students, and managers, who are working at KAUST or at any educational institute or industry in Saudi Arabia. However, the event is primarily targeting the following:

  • KAUST students who have limited background in modeling and simulation and would like to learn it quickly to jumpstart their research
  • KAUST researchers who are doing experimental work and would like to learn a convenient way to simulate the phenomenon he or she is investigating
  • KAUST students who are graduating with a specialty in modeling and simulation and are interested in seeking employment opportunities
  • Saudi industrial partners looking to scale up their ANSYS-based simulation on Shaheen or seeking advanced CFD services from KSL
  • Undergraduate students from Saudi Universities who are interested in polishing their skills of modeling and getting exposure to a world-class supercomputer

Instructions to install ANSYS:

For KAUST Students:

Either install ANSYS on your desktop provided by KAUST (https://it.kaust.edu.sa/software) OR download the academic trial version

https://www.ansys.com/academic/free-student-products

For External Students/Professors:

1. All students can download the free version of software from Ansys Website and install on their laptops ( Link : https://www.ansys.com/academic/free-student-products). Hence there is no need to generate the license file. so for student:

           a. Please download ANSYS software from Link

           b. Install the software on computer/laptop. Software can be used upto 512K cells/nodes

For Saudi Industry:

Please follow the procedure below and attach generated file "LICSERVER.info" along with registration form:

  • Connect to here
  • Select your machine's platform
  • Download zip file
  • Extract the file "AnsRegSvr.exe" from the zip file
  • Open and indicate all the information required
  • A new screen appears, check the information and create the file "LICSERVER.INFO"

Attach the above file with online form - https://fluidcodes.com/9th-kaust-workshop-machine-information-file/

Upload Bio: We decided to gather a 1-page bio from all attendees/registrants so that we can know more about each other. It is very important for the students and graduating professionals to have a short current bio ready all the time. You should also always be ready to give a 15-second "elevator speech" if someone asks you - "tell me something about yourself" Please upload your 1-page bio which paints your best picture. This step is NOT mandatory. We will share the collection of bios with all attendees.  (Bios of attendees)
